Synapses and sensory receptors can
be difficult to demonstrate in routinely prepared microscope slides.
However, there are a few cases where these can be seen. In this
slide, examine motor
endplates (neuromuscular junctions) with skeletal muscle.
Sensory receptors include many
specialized structures containing neurons or axons designed to
detect stimuli from the environment. Many sensory receptors, such as
taste buds, retina, and olfactory epithelium will be examined
specifically in other units. The examples to be studied here are
"mechanoreceptors" consisting of thin layers of connective tissue
around sensory axons.
Examine the micrographs showing
tactile (Meissner's) and
lamellated (Pacinian) corpuscles in the images below and
this slide
of skin,
as well as the neuromuscular spindle in the image below.
Now try this self-assessment
quiz, no one sees the score but you.
Next comes the
muscle unit. |
