Human Structure Virtual Histology
Clinical
note: Acute bacterial infections or mastitis can occur in the
duct system of the breast, usually secondary to obstruction of ducts
by inspissated secretion (dried milk) and stasis of secretion.
- Examine the electron micrograph
of a milk-secreting mammary epithelial cell, showing large lipid
droplets that are secreted in an apocrine manner, whereas milk
proteins are secreted by the merocrine mechanism (Electron
micrograph adapted from Gartner and Hiatt Color Textbook of
Histology 3E). If needed, take a moment to review the
microscopic appearance of the lactating breast.
